Loaves and Fishes partnership

Petuna is helping to tackle food insecurity in Tasmania through regular donations of salmon to statewide emergency food provider, Loaves and Fishes.

Loaves and Fishes distributes emergency food relief through 300 community partners across Tasmania. The organisation also offers pathways to employment in areas such as hospitality, cooking, warehousing and logistics, through to school-based and adult apprenticeships.

Flu shots for children

Children in Tasmania’s remote township of Strahan have been given access to free influenza vaccines in winter, preventing the need for families to travel to the West Coast District Hospital in Queenstown amid Coronavirus restrictions.

Petuna has covered the cost for any children living in Strahan to have the flu vaccine during its own employee vaccine drives, running over June and July each year.

Strahan whale rescue

Petuna employees in Strahan were among those scrambling to save stranded long-finned pilot whales in what is believed to have been one of the largest strandings on record globally, in September 2020.

Included in the rescue mission were three of Petuna’s vessels (two jet boats and a Yakka – heavy works vessel), as well as two cargo nets lined with 32mm mesh for lifting the mammals, several strops and five people to assist the recovery as needed.

It is estimated that although tragically nearly 400 whales died, more than 110 were saved, 65 of which were rescued by the Petuna team.

In 2022, Petuna once again jumped in to save more than 40 whales that became stranded and played a critical role in the responsible disposal of those that sadly did not survive.
